Student Wellness - Super Foods: Cranberries - Manhattan Campus

November 19, 2009 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM
Cafeteria, Manhattan Campus

More than 2000 Years ago Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine,” and today this idea has been reborn as functional foods.  Functional foods, or SUPER FOODS, are foods that may provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition.  These SUPER FOODS, eaten as part of a varied diet, may pack a powerful disease-preventing punch.  Some are foods you already know, like tomatoes, cranberries, nuts and blueberries.  Others, like soy foods and flax, might be new to you. Watch for our monthly SUPER FOODS promotions where you’ll have a chance to taste and learn a little more about these superheroes of our food supply!

This month's SUPER FOOD is Cranberries!  The cranberry is the No. 1 antioxidant, containing the highest concentration of phenols, a type of antioxidant that is thought to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, stroke and heart disease.  Cranberry juice, long recognized for its ability to lessen urinary tract infections, also works against a number of gastrointestinal viruses.
