Haitian-born Wyclef Jean is a Grammy Award-winning
musician/producer, social activist, Goodwill Ambassador to Haiti,
and a self proclaimed " diplomat for cultural evolution."
A founding member of the pioneering hip-hop group Fugees and
prolific solo artist, Wyclef has effortlessly crossed genres,
generations and geographic boundaries with his music.
Mr. Jean established the non-profit foundation "Yéle Haiti" in 2005
to provide aid and assistance to his native Haiti.Yéle Haiti's
mission is to create small-scale, manageable and replicable
projects that foster Haiti's long-term progress.
Coined by Mr.Jean in a song, "Yéle" and means" a cry for freedom."
The charity links with existing groups to initiate and support
programs addressing hunger, education, youth rehabilitation, AIDS
treatment and prevention, and sustainable
development.
All "Yéle Haiti's" projects are designed to bring hope to the
people of Haiti while providing support for the rebuilding of the
country and the renewal of its resources.
These efforts reflect the passion, commitment and ingenuity that
Mr. Jean brings to his music. For example, he has engaged local
hip-hop musicians to deliver awareness messages in forgotten
neighborhoods, and has enlisted famous Haitian friends to support
"Yéle Haiti's" mission. In 2008, Mr. Wyclef Jean also launched
"Together for Haiti." Led by "Yéle Haiti", this new partnership
provides food, creates jobs and supports local agriculture to ease
Haiti's food crisis.
"The greatest accomplishment is giving hope to young kids," Mr.Jean
says. "Yéle Haiti allows kids to dream and it's been a minute in
Haiti since the kids had good dreams. That's what got me here,
dreaming."
