Student Life - Panel Discussion: STAND WITH HAITI - Queens Campus

February 23, 2010 12:10 PM - 1:20 PM
D’Angelo Center Event Room 4th floor, Queens Campus

In the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti, the St. John’s community comes together to learn about Haiti, its history, its people and its needs. In partnership with the Haitian people, we are committed to providing both emergency relief and supporting the long term goal of “building Haiti better.”  Panelists will speak from their experiences in Haiti before and since the earthquake, followed by open discussion with all attendees.  We will provide information about some key organizations in need of financial and other support and discuss ways individuals and groups can stand in solidarity with Haiti.

  • Reflection in words and images from Haiti assembled by Barrett Brenton, Ph.D. , Dept. of Sociology and Anthropology,  St. John’s College

  • Introduction  Joanne Carroll, Ph.D. , College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions

PANEL DISCUSSANTS

  • Felix Germain, Ph.D. , Dept. of History,  St. John’s College
  • Jean Davilus, Graduate student, Global Development and Social Justice Program,  St. John’s College

“For two centuries,  the Haitian people have struggled for basic human and economic rights ...These goals ,which Haitians share  with people all over the world, should direct our policies of aid and rebuilding. ...Haiti itself will be the casualty if we do not help build back better in the way envisioned by Haitians themselves.” -- Paul Farmer, M.D. co-founder, Partners in Health, addressing the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, 1/27/10.
