Why Not Socialism?

Many believe that even if socialism is impractical, it is nevertheless morally superior to capitalism. But is socialism morally superior to capitalism?

James R. Otteson is joint professor of philosophy and economics at Yeshiva University. He received his PhD from the University of Chicago and has taught previously at Georgetown University and the University of Alabama. He is author of Adam Smith’s Marketplace of Life (Cambridge, 2002) and Actual Ethics (Cambridge, 2006), the latter of which won the 2007 Templeton Enterprise Award. His most recent book is Adam Smith (Continuum, 2011). He is currently under contract with Cambridge University Press to write a book tentatively entitled The End of Socialism.
