St. John’s University announces the creation of the Circolo Garibaldi Club to its Staten Island campus on Tuesday, February 8 with a special induction and awards ceremony.

The Circolo Garibaldi Club, which pays tribute to the leader of the unification of Italy who resided on Staten Island during the latter part of the 19th century, will promote Italian language, culture and begin a widespread scholarship program to benefit Italian-American students at St. John’s University and the Staten Island community.

In addition, Circolo Garibaldi Club members will plan events and align itself with other student organizations at the University in order to build on the contributions made by Italian-Americans.

“The diversity of our University is well documented. We began our history more than 140-years ago educating children of immigrants who came to the United States to seek a better life,” said Jerrold Ross, Dean and Academic Vice President of the Staten Island campus. “Circolo Garibaldi will be a great addition to our student organizations in giving our young people more opportunities to get involved in worthwhile club activities at St. John’s.”

An awards ceremony to honor Staten Island dignitaries of Italian-American descent will highlight the event and the announcement of a new student President of the Circolo Garibaldi Club will be made.

The awardees are as follows:

  • James P. Molinaro, Staten Island Borough President
  • Staten Island Councilman and Minority Leader James Oddo
  • Regent Christine Cea
  • Assistant Chief and NYPD Borough Commander for Staten Island, Stephen R. Paragallo

Several St. John’s representatives will take part in the ceremony.
