St. John’s University announces the creation of the Circolo
Garibaldi Club to its Staten Island campus on Tuesday,
February 8 with a special induction and awards
ceremony.
The Circolo Garibaldi Club, which pays tribute to the leader of the
unification of Italy who resided on Staten Island during the latter
part of the 19th century, will promote Italian language, culture
and begin a widespread scholarship program to benefit
Italian-American students at St. John’s University and the Staten
Island community.
In addition, Circolo Garibaldi Club members will plan events and
align itself with other student organizations at the University in
order to build on the contributions made by
Italian-Americans.
“The diversity of our University is well documented. We began our
history more than 140-years ago educating children of immigrants
who came to the United States to seek a better life,” said Jerrold
Ross, Dean and Academic Vice President of the Staten Island campus.
“Circolo Garibaldi will be a great addition to our student
organizations in giving our young people more opportunities to get
involved in worthwhile club activities at St. John’s.”
An awards ceremony to honor Staten Island dignitaries of
Italian-American descent will highlight the event and the
announcement of a new student President of the Circolo Garibaldi
Club will be made.
The awardees are as follows:
- James P. Molinaro, Staten Island Borough President
- Staten Island Councilman and Minority Leader James Oddo
- Regent Christine Cea
- Assistant Chief and NYPD Borough Commander for Staten Island,
Stephen R. Paragallo
Several St. John’s representatives will take part in the ceremony.
Chris Cuccia, Academic Assistant Vice President; will give the
Welcome Address; Stephen DeBlasio, Director of Campus Ministry for
the Staten Island campus, will given the Benediction; and Joseph
Sciame, Vice President for Community Relations and Theresa
Cantarella, Director of Financial Aid in Staten Island, will
present the awards the inaugural recipients.
