Job Description
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development is responsible for leading the following activities; Development (major gift solicitation, annual giving, gift planning, corporate and foundation relations), Advancement Services (donor relations, research, gift processing and financial reporting), and Communications (magazines and newsletters, Web and collateral giving materials). In addition, the position has oversight for developing grant proposals.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a vision and strategic plan for successfully identifying and targeting opportunities unique to our constituent groups.
  • Cultivate external relationships with friends of Bread and Life, foundations, volunteers, corporate executives, vendors, local and federal government officials, donors and potential donors to achieve financial goals.
  • Lead a staff of professionals in the implementation of strategies including relationship building, objective setting/attainment, coaching and teambuilding.
  • Develop, leverage and maintain systems, policies and operations to better identify, manage and elicit support from the New York City and National philanthropic communities.
  • Develop gift acceptance policies for Bread and Life.
  • Organize the annual Johnny’s Angels Dinner and host various special events, mailings and solicitations throughout the year.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in Development with responsibility for revenue generation and operations.
  • Experience in the fund raising, preferably in a not-for-profit environment; proven track record with Capital Campaign experience preferred.
  • Proven ability to manage and motivate staff to high levels of performance while creating a culture of inclusion and climate of workplace satisfaction.
  • Experience in developing a strategic development plan demonstrating broad vision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present/engage audiences including internal peers, board members, donors and corporate executives.
  • Proven ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse socio-economic, religious, ethnic, racial, age, gender and geographic backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively with peers in a collegial manner and maintain the highest level of personal integrity
  • Appreciation for working in a faith based, mission focused environment.

Located in Brooklyn, N.Y., Bread and Life is one of New York’s largest meal providers in New York City serving more than 300,000 meals last year.  St. John’s Bread and Life is currently launching a $10 million Capital Building Campaign, “Feeding the Future” and seeks an exceptional leader to serve as its new Director of Development.

The St. John's Bread and Life kitchen is our principle effort in helping those in need, by providing our community daily with a good solid meal, them an opportunity to start that day well. In order to accomplish our mission, we need not only financial donors, but also an extensive network of committed volunteers, and business relationships with key suppliers.

Our Programs
The Soup Kitchen, Mobile Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry are the heart and soul of the daily work we do at St. John's Bread and Life. Beyond the nourishment of food, we offer respect and support to our needy community, including legal and medical referrals, nutritional counseling and single stop social services.
