Job Description
The Director of Development and Corporate Relations is charged with oversight and management of the School of Risk Management’s corporate development and fundraising operations.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and nurturing strong and supportive ties between School of Risk Management and senior-level managers and alumni in positions of leadership within the insurance and financial services industry.
  • Overseeing and managing School of Risk Management fund-raising activities, in close collaboration with Executive Director and Director of Marketing and Industry Relations, to cultivate and develop corporate/foundation support for the School of Risk Management endowments (currently $25 million); Annual Fund Appeal ($1 million per year); fundraising events ($1.6 million per year) and designated funding for program, faculty and student needs ($200,000 - $300,000 per year).

Major Tasks

  • Developing and coordinating mutually beneficial partnerships between School of Risk Management and insurance and financial services organizations, corporate managers, and senior-level alumni, with the goal of bridging company interest with School of Risk Management programs, services, capabilities and priorities.
  • Collaboration with Executive Director and Director of Division of Marketing and Industry Relations in building and strengthening School of Risk Management relationships, especially with companies represented on the School of Risk Management Board of Overseers, through ongoing communications, interaction, and personal visits.
  • Developing and implementing, in collaboration with Executive Director and Director of Division of Marketing and Industry Relations, multi-year plan which achieves corporate development and fundraising goals of School of Risk Management.
  • Writing project prospectuses and proposals for companies and foundations.
  • Developing and managing stewardship and reporting systems which serve as effective communication tools with donors and prospective donors.
  • Assistance in the development of School of Risk Management Board of Overseers and Executive Advisory Council agendas and supporting materials for development and fundraising activities and programs; formal recording of meeting discussions.
  • Serving as liaison between the School of Risk Management, the Tobin College of Business External Affairs, and St. John’s University Institutional Advancement, on matters involving corporate relations and fundraising.
  • Maintaining relationships and memberships in key organizations representing the risk management, insurance and financial services community that will help foster greater involvement and long-term financial support for the School of Risk Management and the broader university.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree is required; Masters or advanced study in business related area are preferred.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in management/administration with a corporation or education-related organization, with proven record of relationship building.
  • Demonstrated experience dealing person-to-person with corporate managers and executives in developing joint programs and working relationships.
  • Demonstrated experience making presentations to industry and organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience writing quality reports and correspondence.
  • Substantial knowledge and experience in insurance and financial services, preferably in the global property/casualty, brokerage and/or reinsurance areas.
  • Experience in higher education and in developing industry/education partnerships and financial support is highly desirable.
