Duties & Responsibilities
America Reads america Serves offer the community services
that students from St. John's University can provide to enhance and
facilitate everyday tasks. We offer a variety of
opportunities for our students in all different fields of service
and expertise.
We accept all studentd with Federal Work Study who are looking
to work for the entire year. Our student workers are trained
to understand the importance of the goals of the program and their
role in achieving them to provide an ultimate sense of fulfillment,
commitment, service, and professionalism. We offer
tutoring/mentoring to sites as well as specialized service
opportunities that are specific to our workers' interests and
fields of study.
Lead Educational Advisors (LEA) - (tutors)
assist students in all grade levels in any subject specific to the
student's needs. They are also prepared to guide, encourage,
and motivate students about their future career possibilities and
academic struggles. They can tutor/mentor in classrooms,
local libraries, tutoring centers, boys/Girls Clubs, etc.
LEA's can target students in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade
and assist in any content area such as Mathematics, English,
Science, Language, History, etc. Several LEA's outside the
classroom can serve as Homework Helpers and assist with projects in
an after-school setting.
LEA's within the classroom setting serve as assistants to the
teachers and work with the children either on an individual or
small-group basis. LEA's can be a part of a general education
classroom setting or volunteer their services in a special
education setting. They may work closely with the classroom teacher
to prepare and assist class activities, grade assignments, and
complete any task provided by the teacher.
Community Service Initiatives (CSIs) -
students who choose placements in a specialized field that
complements their major/minor at the University. This newly
added feature opens a whole new genre to the program and gives
students the freedom to pick and choose a field that will develop
their skills needed to land their dream job. Sites vary as they are
specific to the student. Sites may include a non-profit
organization, nursing home, etc. SDI's are responsible for
fully completing the tasks/duties that are assigned to them by
their Site Supervisor depending on the site's expectations and
regulations. They must follow protocol that is standard to the site
in addition to AR*AS protocol.

Will begin working at the end of September/beginning of October
and finish through until the end of the academic year (depending on
FWS grant amount remaining).
