St. John's University School of Law Presents: Making History: Race, Gender and the Media in the 2008 Elections

Symposium will gather renowned political authorities to discuss key factors of 2008 Elections on Sept. 26-27.

The Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development at St. John’s University School of Law and the Journal of Legal Commentary will host a symposium titled: MAKING HISTORY: Race, Gender and the Media in the 2008 Elections, September 26-27 at St. John’s School of Law.

The MAKING HISTORY symposium will investigate issues of race, gender, media, election law and policy through a series of engaging and expert panel discussions, featured dialogues, and addresses, including a keynote address by Donna Brazile, the first African American to lead a major presidential campaign, a frequent CNN contributor, and Chair of the Democratic National Committee's Voting Rights Institute (VRI). 

In addition, New York Times editor, Marcus Mabry, author of the biography “Twice As Good: Condoleezza Rice and Her Path To Power”, former Chief Correspondent at Newsweek, and winner of several journalism awards, will participate in a dialogue with noted critical race and election law scholar, Sherillyn Ifill, on the impact of elections on American politics. This discussion will be moderated by New York Daily News Columnist Errol Louis.

Other speakers and panelists include renowned scholars, practitioners, activists, government officials, and political commentators, such as Kate O’Beirne, President of the National Review Institute; Jonathan Adelstein, FCC Commissioner; Ellen Weintraub, Federal Election Commissioner; and several esteemed college and university Professors from schools throughout the United States. 

Discussion topics for this event include: Perspectives on Race and Ethnicity in the 2008 Elections and Beyond; Perspectives on Gender in the 2008 Elections; The Role of the Media in Shaping Perceptions of Race, Ethnicity, and Gender in the 2008 Elections; Comments from the Federal Communications Commission; The Intersectionality of Race, Gender, Media and the Political Process; Election Law and Policy in the 2008 Elections; A Dialogue on Elections and the Public Sphere; A Dialogue on Legal Constructions of Race, Gender, and Identity in the 2008 Elections; and Developments in New Technology and Media Policy.
