March 19, 2013
On March 14, 2013, St. John’s University invited students,
faculty, and staff on both the Queens and Staten Island campuses to
shave their heads for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, or cut 8-10
inches of their hair to donate to Locks of Love. 55 members of the
University community, including Provost Dr. Robert A. Mangione,
Men’s Lacrosse Coach Jason Miller and several other administrators
and students participated.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a cancer charity that collects
donations to fund cancer research in an effort to find a cure for
childhood cancers. They also ask that donors participate in shaving
their heads to show support of those battling the diseases, while
Locks of Love uses donated hair to create wigs for patients who
have lost their own hair due to treatments. St. John’s University
donated 22 locks (10+ inches) at the event in addition to those
who shaved their heads. The event raised over $35,000.
Individuals who attended the event were able to comment on the
experience and what it meant to them. To see what they have
