Steve Lavin, Head Coach of the men's basketball team, will
discuss his battle with prostate cancer as the featured speaker at
St. John's University's seventh annual Relay for Life all-night
walkathon at the Queens campus on Friday, April
The event, to be held in Carenesecca Arena from 6
p.m. to 6 a.m. the next morning, will raise funds once again for
the American Cancer
Society. Completely driven by St. John's students, this year's
Relay for Life is expected to draw around 1,500 attendees who will
walk for a total of 12 hours throughout the
Diagnosed with prostate cancer in September, 2011, Lavin was forced
to miss most of that Season to fight the disease. Today, he is
cancer-free and continues to work with numerous charities,
organizations and events seeking a cure for cancer.
For the past seven years, he has been part of the President's Club
leadership-giving group of The V
Foundation for Cancer Research, which includes Duke's
Mike Krzyewski, Michigan State's
Tom Izzo and Kentucky's John
Calipari. Lavin also led more than 400 fans of
the St. John's men's and women's basketball teams in raising more
than $38,000 for pediatric cancer research at
University Service Day's "Dribble for the Cure" last
Cancer has touched other members of the Lavin family. His father,
Cap, was a 22-year prostate cancer survivor prior to his passing in
February. His mother, Mary, overcame skin cancer.

Cancer Society through Relay
