Nature and Purpose of Agency
Our principal focus is providing services to kids in need, and we are also a leading advocate before State and Federal governments for issues relating to the well being of children and young adults. The Covenant House's focus is on its primary mission to provide social services for at risk young people, including job training and, whenever possible, family reunification.  Client’s of Covenant House stay for 30 days and must agree to attend all workshops for job readiness and placements as well as additional support workshops and sessions as needed.

Tasks Available for Students
Our programs include:

  • Mock Interviews – Assist students with mock interviews every Wed. from 9:00am – 11:30am.  Ask to assist Richard.
  • Tutoring – Assist with essay writing and in other areas of an organized tutoring program.  Studies show, most students struggle with math and writing.   Monday through Thursday 9am – 12pm.  Ask to assist Andre.
  • Crisis Care - The cornerstone of the Covenant House program: any youth under 21 can receive immediate help, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our doors never close.
  • Outreach - Not every kid knows how or where to find us. Every night, our counselors drive vans through the city streets searching for young people in need, providing warm clothing, food, counseling, and support.
  • NINELINE Hotline - Every year, over 50,000 kids and parents in crisis across the U.S. and Canada call the Covenant House Nineline (1-800-999-9999), our national, toll-free crisis hotline which operates 24 hours a day. With a database of over 30,000 shelters and organizations, our counselors can provide immediate crisis counseling and refer callers to help in their area.
  • Rights of Passage - Every kid deserves the right to a future. Rights of Passage is a program that provides young men and women between 18 and 21 with the chance they need to make a life for themselves away from the street. With the help of professional staff, mentors and volunteers, Rights of passage residents are provided with educational and vocational opportunities. Residents live at Covenant House while we give them the support they need to build themselves a future.
Assist with Day Care program from 8am - 6pm.
  • Community Service Centers - The goals of the Centers are twofold: first, the Centers provide follow-up and aftercare for graduates from our crisis shelters and Rights of Passage programs who may need support and continuing contact with Covenant House staff now that they are on their own. For this purpose the Centers are located in communities where our graduates are living. Second, the Centers offer preventive services aimed at contacting youth at risk before they leave home. Covenant House staff work in the communities from which our kids traditionally come to intervene before there is a family breakdown.
  • Food Prep – assist with serving lunch and food in the kitchen as well as clean-up.

In addition, Covenant House has Substance Abuse Programs which offer help to youth addicted to alcohol or drugs. Our Mother/Child Program provides special care for pregnant and parenting young women. Youth with health problems can receive treatment in our on-site medical clinics. Finally, our Aftercare Program provides vital additional support to young people after they leave Covenant House.
