P.S. 131 serves multi-ethnic children from grades K-5. There are various programs; including an early morning tutoring program (before class), resource room, art therapy, America Reads Program and various after school activities. P.S. 131 is been ranked the top school in District 29 for two consecutive years and 80% of students are provided free lunch. Tasks Available for Students Assist classroom teachers in tutoring elementary school children in all academic areas and homework assistance, leading and teaching small groups of children in multicultural arts and crafts, team sports, and services, and learn office operations and administrative tasks and program management, participate in special projects. English as a second language is a necessity, and phonics and one-on-one ESL opportunities are available. Child Psychology, School counselors, Family counselors and Speech teachers are all available to receive assistance. Time Requirements St. John’s University students may choose their own flexible volunteer hours.
