Nature and Purpose of Agency
The Center was established in 1979 to welcome Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union.  The Center offers a wide variety of services for immigrants from all backgrounds.  Services include adult literacy services, case management, emergency food assistance, and health information and referral.

The food pantry serves approximately 300 people per month.

Tasks Available for Students
Food pantry: Assist with unloading, packaging and distributing food.
Immigration assistance: Assist clients in completing immigration forms.

Time Requirements   

  • Food pantry: Last Monday of every month, 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., 4-6 volunteers to assist with unloading and repacking food.
  • Food pantry: Last Tuesday of every month, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., 1-2 volunteers to assist with food distribution.
  • Immigration assistance: Flexible hours Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; students must commit enough time to learn about the immigration process and the paperwork involved (minimum 15 hours during the semester).


Student Awareness/Special Instructions
Conversational Russian skills are helpful but not required.

Driving
Take Utopia Pkwy going West, then get on Grand Central Parkway West.  Exit at 69th Rd.  Take a right on 108th Street; look for the Central Queens YM and YWHA on the right.  (10-15 minutes from campus)

Public Transportation
Take the Q46 bus to Union Turnpike/Queens Blvd.  Transfer to the E or F subway going toward Manhattan.  Take the subway to 71st Ave/Forest Hillls Station.  Then, walk North on 108th Street about ½ a mile.  The Central Queens YM and YWHA is on your right.
