The Information Technology department provides wireless network
services in academic and study areas throughout the St. John's
University campuses to complement the laptop program.
Classrooms, study halls, libraries, Residence Hall lounges, and
many outdoor areas have wireless service. Additionally, the
wireless service is compatible between all campuses with the
exception of the Law School.
Wireless service coverage has been requested in the Residence
Hall rooms, however, it is cost prohibitive at this time to
implement in the existing buildings. The concrete walls limit
radio range, and it is difficult to run wires to support the
wireless equipment through them.
Wireless Technology standards continues to evolve and St. John's
University will continue to evolve with them.
In 2003, laptops distributed to the freshmen were
equipped with the 802.11b radio service, and now the 2004
laptops have 802.11g radios.
