College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions Hosts Industrial Pharmacy Symposium

Further enriching St. John’s University’s quality academics, St. John’s College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions brought together pharmacy scholars and industry leaders at its Third Annual Dr. Charles I. Jarowski Industrial Pharmacy Symposium held at Taffner Field House on May 19, 2009. The symposium is named in honor of Charles I. Jarowski, Ph.D., who joined the St. John’s University faculty in 1969, rose to the rank of full professor and distinguished university scholar and has since retired.  A renowned pharmaceutical scientist and researcher with a world-wide reputation in his field, Dr. Jarowski has authored more than 50 scientific publications and pharmaceutical patents.

The symposium’s 80 participants included students, researchers and engineers working in the field of industrial pharmacy. The theme of the symposium, “Recent Advances in Pharmaceutical Processing,” was explored by six presenters who are all leaders in their field. Their presentations are listed below.

Shilpa Tikekar, a College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions student currently in her first year of the Ph.D. program, said of the symposium, “Although we’ve touched upon some of these topics in our classes, this symposium gave me the opportunity to gain more in-depth knowledge about the areas.”

Louis Trombetta, Ph.D., Professor and Chair, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, closed the symposium and thanked the presenters for sharing their knowledge. Dr. Trombetta also thanked the symposium’s moderators including Dileep Bhagwat, Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Epi Cept Corp.; Wanatee Phuapradit, Ph.D., Senior Director, Teva U.S.A.; Navnit Shah, Ph.D., Distinguished Research Leader, Hoffman-La Roche; and Mahendra G. Shah, Chairman and CEO, Next Wave Pharmaceuticals.

Robert A. Mangione, Dean, College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, then gave each presenter a plaque honoring their participation in the Third Annual Dr. Charles I. Jarowski Industrial Pharmacy Symposium.
