Dr. William DiFazio, Professor in the
Sociology & Anthropology was honored at the Hunger Action
Network on New York 30th Anniversary Event.
Hunger Action Network's 30th anniversary
event took place in NYC on Oct. 16, 2012 at 1199 SEIU, 310 W. 43rd
Street, New York, NY.
Hunger Action Network was started in 1982
by emergency food programs and food banks to be the voice of the
anti hunger movement in New York. From day one it has
combined the goal of working to help feed people today (e.g.,
increase funding for emergency food, stronger food stamp programs,
more community gardens) while promoting long-term solutions such as
universal health care, living wage jobs and affordable
housing.
Honored this year were five long time (and
new) champions of the effort to end hunger and promote community
food security:
- Bill DiFazio, a long-time HANNYS
board member, educator/writer on poverty and economic justice, and
former board member of St. John's Bread and Life;
- Doreen Wohl and the West Side Campaign Against
Hunger. More than 30 years old, WSCAH feeds more people
than any other pantry in the city while promoting innovations such
as nutrition quality, client choice and public
advocacy;
- Welfare Rights Initiative has been an effective voce
for welfare participants and their rights, especially on access to
education;
- Brooklyn Food Coalition in a short period of time has
mobilized thousands of local residents on food policy, local food
and improving school meals;
- United Food Commercial Workers
Union (District 1500) has assisted HANNYS' work on food stamp
outreach while being a leader on food policy / deserts, minimum
wage and worker rights
