Fun in the Sunshine State

April 04, 2012

Perfect weather, gorgeous scenery, spring training and some of the best golf courses in the country: just a few of Florida’s defining characteristics. And alumni and friends living in the Sunshine State got to experience all that and more during a weekend of events held in the South Florida area.

“It’s important that we keep all of our alumni connected to St. John’s University,” said Mark Andrews, Associate Director for Special Constituents in the Office of Alumni Relations. “We have a lot of very dedicated graduates living in Florida, and it’s always fun to catch up with them and keep them informed of what’s going on back at campus. Hopefully this weekend of events will serve as yet another step in our effort to get more and more involved with our Regional Alumni Chapters.”

The weekend’s events included a networking reception, a golf outing at the beautiful Hillcrest Golf and Country Club and two spring training games. Warm, sunny weather made the golf outing a blast, while the baseball games – featuring the New York Mets vs. the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees vs. the Detroit Tigers – provided the perfect backdrop as alumni reminisced with old friends and former classmates.

The games also helped some guests reconnect with their Northeast roots.

“As you could imagine, many of those alumni are either Mets or Yankees fans,” Andrews explained, “so it’s always great when we get together to see those teams play. It reminds alumni of New York and of their student days. And, of course, we can all agree that it’s just plain fun to get back in the baseball season.”

Andrews hopes to make St. John’s Regional Alumni Chapters as effective as possible, and he attributes their success largely to the outstanding alumni and friends who get involved.

“My thanks go out to all the St. John’s alumni from around the country who are committed to the University and to staying close with fellow graduates,” he said. “Without their tremendous effort, events like these would not be possible.”
