LL.M. in Bankruptcy Program honors Professor Richard Lieb

February 26, 2009

More than 100 friends, family and colleagues gathered at the Harvard Club to honor Professor Richard Lieb at an elegant reception hosted by the St. John’s Law LL.M. in Bankruptcy Program on February 4, 2009.  The event was a tremendous success and in addition to paying tribute to Professor Lieb, it raised a substantial sum that will be used to establish an endowed scholarship in his honor.  Event Chair Harvey R. Miller of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP and Professor G. Ray Warner, Director of the LL.M. in Bankruptcy Program presented Professor Lieb with the Dean’s Award.

Professor Lieb, a legend in the bankruptcy world and a force in the St. John’s School of Law’s LL.M. program, was a bankruptcy innovator and leading practitioner, co-founding the long-time New York firm of Kronish Lieb, now Cooley Kronish. As a professor at St. John's Law School, Richard Lieb is known as a kind and caring mentor for his students and for the many creative courses he has designed, including the Supreme Court Amicus Brief seminar, where LL.M. students prepare and file amicus briefs on behalf of bankruptcy law professors in seminal bankruptcy appeals.  The class has filed briefs in three Supreme Court and two courts of appeals cases, and will file its fourth Supreme Court amicus brief shortly.

Professor Lieb is an accomplished scholar.  He has authored more than 20 law review articles, is the Editor-in-Chief of two major bankruptcy journals, and a founding author of a leading bankruptcy treatise, Norton Bankruptcy Law and Practice.

The success of the evening is a reflection of the difference Professor Lieb has made in the field of bankruptcy law and in the lives of his students.  In grateful appreciation for Professor Lieb’s accomplishments, each year the Law School will award the Richard Lieb Scholarship to a deserving LL.M. student.  The first recipient will be awarded this fall.

Professor G. Ray Warner and the School of Law are thankful to the following members of the Reception Committee for organizing the evening’s events: Robert J. Rosenberg, Dennis J. Connolly, Robert J. Feinstein, Lawrence C. Gottlieb, Yvette Gutierrez, John J. Jerome, Sandra E. Mayerson, Hon. Wm. L. Norton, Jr., Alec P. Ostrow, Leonard Rosen, Brad Eric Scheler, and Professor Robert M. Zinman.
