Richard Hans, who leads DLA Piper's litigation department in New
York, has been appointed co-managing partner of the Manhattan
office, the firm's largest U.S. branch. Hans, 51, joins Heidi
Levine, also co-managing partner of the 250-attorney office.
Hans will continue to chair the firm's New York litigation
practice, composed of about 100 attorneys. He represents financial
institutions and other firms in commercial securities and
structured products litigation and advises clients in regulatory
and internal investigations.
In his new role, Hans said he will oversee office operations,
personnel and communication with partners in other offices, and
continue to handle day-to-day client matters and make court
Much of the firm's New York office growth will depend on the
economic environment and continuing client development, he said.
"The biggest challenge here in New York is, the competition in this
city is as strong, if not stronger, than anywhere else in the
world," Hans said. "It is challenging because there are really good
lawyers that are looking to go after the same business that we're
going after. In this economy, where clients are keeping their cards
close to the vest, there is not as much business to go around both
on the corporate side and the litigation side." But, he added, "I'm
excited to take on the role."
