St. John's Moves To No. 15/15 In National Polls For First Time Since 2000

February 28, 2011

They can’t stop the Storm!

Earning their sixth straight win with an 81-68 victory over No. 15 Villanova, St. John’s soared to No. 15 in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 rankings — an eight-point jump. The Red Storm also leaped from No. 25 to No. 15 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.

Tied for third place in the BIG EAST, the Red Storm showed they didn’t have to be at Madison Square Garden to clobber a Top 25 team — they beat the Wildcats at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center. The only other team to win six straight games against a ranked opponent this season is No. 5/5 Texas.

Senior guard Dwight Hardy scored a career-high 34 points. He is the only BIG EAST player to have won Player of the Week three times this season. Senior guard/forward D.J. Kennedy earned 12 points and 14 rebounds for his second-straight double-double — his fourth this season and 14th of his career. Senior guard Paris Horne and senior forward Justin Brownlee scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The win follows the Storm’s 76-51 rout of DePaul on Feb. 23 — the Storm’s 500th game at Carnesseca Arena. On Feb. 19, the Storm pummeled No. 4 Pittsburgh at Madison Square Garden.

With St. John’s resurgence, Head Coach Steve Lavin is in more demand to share his thoughts with leading sports commentators. On Tuesday, Feb. 22, Coach Lavin appeared on “Jim Rome is Burning,” ESPN’s popular half-hour of sports discussion and opinion.

Producing winners in the classroom as well as the playing courts and fields, St. John’s 16 Division I, BIG EAST men’s and women’s athletic teams reflect St. John’s 141-year tradition of excellence as a Catholic, Vincentian university that prepares students for leadership in their professions, communities and world.

The Red Storm’s next game is against Seton Hall on March 3 in Newark, NJ.
