Theme: Engage in Your Career

Self Assessment
Knowing yourself is a critical step in making satisfying life choices.  The better you understand yourself and the better you can articulate your strengths to others, the better career decisions you will make.  In deciding upon a major or a career, it is typically recommended that you reflect on and define your values, interests, personality and skills.

  • Make an appointment to see a career counselor and get assistance as you explore your interests, values, and skills
  • Attend a “Choosing our Major” workshop and/or complete a self assessment
  • Join at least one club or professional student organization and network
  • Visit the Freshman Center to find out what courses to take
  • Get involved in FREE (Focus on Real Experience and Employment), Intern Track

Career Awareness
A very important step in deciding on a good career fit is to gather detailed information on what an occupation is truly like.

  • Browse the “What can I do with a major in ….?” section of the University Career Services website (www.stjohns.edu/careercenter )
  • Go to the Major’s Fair, Job/Internship Fairs, employer panels and presentations
  • Review career literature in the University library, the University Career Services library and on the internet
  • Attend a resume workshop to begin creating your resume and add to the resume each year

Career Exploration
Finally, the best way to see if an occupation is truly a good fit for you is to experiment with different industries or occupations by exposing yourself to that field.

  • Log in to St. John’s CareerLink and Internships.com to explore and apply for opportunities
  • Attend Internships 101, obtain information about volunteering and internships
  • Line up an interesting summer job or internship
  • Participate in InSIDE St. John’s (Internal Student Internship Discovery Experience) in your second semester
