Theme: Assess and Refine Your
Options
Self Assessment
As you enter the second year you continue to develop as a
individual. Understanding how the college environment has
impacted your values, interests, personality and skills will help
you make more informed choices about your career direction.
- A once a semester check up with a career counselor will help
you monitor the connection between your changing interests, choice
of major and selection of career.
- Take an elective in a major you are considering
- Stay involved in student organizations
Career Awareness
Once you have a list of many career titles that are potentially
good options for you, explore them in more detail.
- Continue to review career literature in the University library,
the University Career Services Library and on the internet
- Update your resume and have it reviewed by a career
counselor
- Talk with professors and advisors about required course work
and future career possibilities in majors of interest
- Contact a COACH and set up informational interviews
- Begin attending workshops on interview skills, cover letters,
the world of work and networking
- Attend all applicable Career Expos and Fairs employer panels
and presentations
Career Exploration
Once you have compared several potential occupations to what you
know about yourself and what you need in a career, you are in an
excellent position to narrow your list and focus on a clear goal.
- Secure an internship, get part time work, or volunteer in
an area of interest
- Obtain part time or summer employment in a field related to
your career interests
- Participate in the Shadowing Program
- Participate in InSIDE St. John’s (Internal Student Internship
Discovery Experience)
