Debate Society Now Ranked in Top 150
Teams in the World
The St. John’s University Debate Society participated in its
second-ever trip to the World University Debating Championships,
this time hosted by Koc University in the city of Antalya,
Members Alia Bellwood, Tim Barr, Korey Pace, and Mohammad Qasim
competed in nine rounds of intercollegiate debate against teams
from more than 40 different countries.
The World Championships (WUDC) this year hosted 400-plus teams from
countries all over the world. The University of Sydney, Australia
won the competition this year debating in the final round against
Harvard, Oxford, and the London School of Economics.
As a result of their efforts over the past three years, St. John’s
Debate Society has been ranked in the top 150 teams in the world.
Their first appearance on the international rankings of debate
programs places them at 149 out of 320 programs ranked.
The rankings are based on performance as a whole at the past five

The Society kicks off spring competition with an early trip to
Ithaca to participate in the inaugural Ithaca College Invitational
Tournament next weekend. The season draws to a close in April with
an appearance at the U.S. Universities National Championship at
Regis University in Denver, Colorado.
