Understanding Student Advisement Reports

What the Student Advisement Report Is:

  • It is an advisement tool designed to enhance student advisement sessions.
  • It is an UNOFFICIAL guide that displays how a student's coursework is applied to his or her degree program.
  • It is an UNOFFICIAL source of information on degree requirements and G.P.A.s.

Getting Started
Always start with the "Detail Requirements" version of the Student Advisement Report. Be sure also to see if there is anything listed under the "Additional Information" version.

Advisement reports are divided into different areas. These may vary by program. Typical areas are the major area, the core area, and "free electives." For each area, the advisement report gives a G.P.A., calculated solely on the basis of the grades shown in that area. This G.P.A. is accurate for the grades shown, but is not an official G.P.A. It is informational only.

The "Courses Not Used" area at the bottom of the advisement report shows all courses that have not been used to satisfy some requirement. This includes failed courses and those from which a student has withdrawn. These grades may count in a student's official G.P.A., major G.P.A. or honors G.P.A.

Note that the overall and program G.P.A.'s shown at the top of the advisement report include all grades in all courses taken. The area G.P.A.'s, as already noted, are calculated solely on the basis of the grades shown in each area.

All G.P.A.'s shown on the student advisement report are unofficial.
