December 01, 2009

On Wednesday, November 18, 2009 St. John’s University The School of Education and the Office of Institutional Advancement hosted a fashion show as part of The School of Education’s ongoing Centennial Celebration.  All proceeds from the event were dedicated to the Centennial Scholarship Fund for Staten Island, a scholarship fund created to provide financial assistance to Education students studying on the Staten Island campus.

Jerrold Ross, Ph.D., Dean of The School of Education welcomed the more than 200 alumni, students, faculty and members of the Staten Island community and expressed his appreciation for their support of the Centennial Scholarship Fund. Guests enjoyed a pre-show dinner accompanied by live piano music before settling in for a look at the fashions displayed by many local merchants, including Ivory & Co., Dress Barn, Peek-a-Boo, JC Penney and Kersner and Son Furrier.

Entitled “School Daze” and offering a retrospective theme, the show provided a nostalgic look at the most popular styles of clothing favored by teachers and students throughout the years.

“We conceived the idea of the fashion show so we could raise money to help a young person who would not otherwise be able to attend St. John’s University,” exclaimed Prof. Francesca Carroll who, along with Professors Patricia Campbell ’54NDC and Maria Fiorelli, all faculty members in The School of Education, served as co-chairperson of the event.

“We were hoping to host something that our alumni would have an interest in attending,” said Nicholas A. Legakis ’97SVC, ’07MPS, Director, Institutional Advancement, Staten Island campus. “I would say that based on the attendance and the money we raised, which was nearly $10,000, we were successful!”

Alumni enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with one another while getting a sense of what school fashions were like many years ago.  “The show was well put together and provided plenty of entertainment,” said JohnCarl Ziegler ’08CPS.  “I hope that there’s another one next year.”

“This fashion show was a great experience,” agreed Kara Scandaglia ’08CPS.  “I enjoyed watching St. John’s students, faculty and alumni take to the runway in fashions past and present.  As a recent graduate, I’m glad that St. John’s keeps in touch with its alumni.  I look forward to attending future events.”

Lisa Camerlengo ’99C was grateful for the opportunity to bring her family to another interesting event while helping to support the university she loves.  “This was a wonderful evening spent with family and friends,” she said.  “Not only was it a great way to give back to alma mater, it also reflected the fantastic collaboration between students, faculty and alumni in pulling everything together.  My family and I often attend
St. John’s events and it always feels like coming home again.”
